↠ Reference/History: Daniel Cain grew up in the care of his spinster aunt, most of his life he was just the basic boy next door. Intrests in sports, girls and helping people. Since his parents died when he was young he had a deep rooted need to help those around him. This pushed him to go to medical school even if he couldn't really afford it. He took out loans and drove a delivery truck at night to make ends meet. In college he had a roommate who was more or less his sugar daddy until he randomly moved out to go become a dancer in New York. While attending Miskatonic Medical, he quickly rose to being one of the brightest stars on the campus, catching the eye of the Dean's lovely daughter Megan. The two quickly started dating and sleeping together under the Dean's nose behind closed doors, but since Meg wouldn't move in with him he had to get a roommate.
The roommmate in question, one Herbert West. A cracked genius who a knack for bringing chaos wherever he goes. Due to a crazy string of events, Dan's cat dies and is revived, Megan's father is killed and revived, and a professior named Carl Hill, a family friend of Megan's who creeped on her growing up, figures out what Dan and Herbert have been doing and steals the work from Herbert. The two have to fight to get it back, but are a little late, just barely saving Megan from being raped by a headless corpse.
Dan barely escapes the mess, and Megan dies before they can escape. It appered Herbert was dead, but he managed to survive. After the investigation died down, somehow, Herbert convinced Dan to go with him to help soldiers in the Peruvian conflict, in truth it is to further Herbert's research. It becomes clear that the war is having a terrible impact on Dan's mental health, more so watching his friend decend into a frenzied madness. He nearly died in Peru saving Herbert, before the small man let them return to Arkham.
As things go, Dan and Herbert got a new house, one clearly of Herbert's liking, both working at Miskatonic General in the day, and in their basement lab at night. Dan was miserable and wanted to leave, but Herbert always found ways to keep him. The most ghastly was building Dan a new body for Megan, convincing him that Megan could live again. As with most of Herbert's promises this didn't work out, but mostly due to a meddling cop and the head of Hill returning. Dan finally leaves, but only after the crypt next to their home collapses seemingly killing Herbert, Dan leaves with Francesca, a woman he met in Peru to seemingly start a life together. Neither knowing Herbert wasn't dead.

↠ What is Your Character's Sin?: Lust
There are many driving forces in Dan's life and many roots to those forces but the core trait that defines him is his desires. It's these desires that motivate him to become a doctor as well as entices him towards a career of working with Doctor Herbert West in an attempt to defeat the oppression of death.
It isn't for power or fame but acceptance and affection. When Dan is first introduced he follows the straight and narrow, working with a scholarship in order to better the world around him. He's played up as a model student with model grades, stunning good looks and a model girl friend. As Doctor West turns his world upside down, you see that Dan isn't as put together as he tries to act. He craves affection, success and a place where he belongs. It's these desires that compel him to go to great lengths to make his mark on history as well as help those around him.
Dan has a good heart but the reasons he does things are naturally selfish. He doesn't want to let people down or face the possibility that he would be left alone. His attempts to help Doctor West conquer death causes him to lose the love of his life Megan Halsey. For two years after that, he tries to bring her back. Desperate for the affection and love he'd given her. Even while trying to do this, Dan continues to sleep with others and give pieces of himself to others, trying to find an affection that rivals his relationship with Megan Halsey.
These desires make Dan easy to manipulate and it is one of the reasons that he continues to follow Herbert West, even as the young doctor turns into a mad scientist.
